This is a human issue not a gender diversity token issue

I have recently been doing research for my new book and have been shocked and delighted to discover that much of what we always knew to be true (intuitively) has, in recent years, been verified by Scientists as Biological differences. I am talking, of course, about the differences between men and women. We have joked about men’s ability to ‘focus’ and women’s ability to ‘multi-task’ but did you know that babies have a female brain for the fist 8 weeks of life? Did you know that the boy gets doused with testosterone at 8 weeks and then the communication centres shrink and the sexual centre grows to double its original size?

These new findings are only possible because of advances in technology such as MRI scanning and PET scans. We know that women’s brains are wired and connected in a way that a man's isn’t. We know that men’s brains shut down multiple times during the day but a woman’s stays alert even when she is resting.

What is fascinating is that the corporate world doesn’t see this as a commercial opportunity. If you can have a mixed team where people can read emotions and think laterally combined with others who can remain on task at the exclusion of all else……is that better than the monoculture we perpetuate where, generally, only women who are at the male end of the spectrum get senior posts?

We know it’s better because Deloitte (who have been running Gender IQ™ training for decade) report savings of $190 million dollars in decreased turnover alone.

What are you doing to provide your team with Gender IQ™?

Watch this video, it will make you laugh and educate you too. Oh and don’t forget to pass it on!

The trouble with being 'right'

I have just completed another extraordinary 2 day event with women leaders from the UK and Europe and an enlightened man from Italy. Everybody gained new distinctions and created a new peer group of high flying A players (ordinary people doing extraordinary things)

We - women in leadership - had a blast! We nailed the concept of Gender Intelligence for Gender Diversity but the overwhelmng call was 'where are all the men?' Gender Intelligence is a human issue that affects everyone and we all need to educate ourselves for the 21st Century and beyond.

Sadly, there is still an old world where some believe they are 'right' about the inflexible corporate culture we have all become accustomed to.

If you are of the new order, pushing for change, then remember – there is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people feel safe around you so BE the change you seek in the world.

Remember also that there is no possibility in being ‘right’ – stay open minded and always willing to learn. If somebody has a different view point to you then be inquisitive – there may be something to learn. You cannot move from a fixed position.

Talking of fixed positions – I invite you to remember this. A really good example of why fixed positions must be challenged http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRLrWUIM_g4

International Women's Day

International Women's Day has been celebrated since in the early 1900's. Each year on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. It is also a time of reflection as Governments, organizations and individuals ask themselves what the women’s movement has achieved globally.

I was listening to Radio 4 this morning and the speaker on 'Thought for the Day' was reflecting on the fact that we still have a pay gap. In other words, despite the fact that we have had equal opportunities legislation for over 30 years, men are still paid 12% more than women for doing the same job.

I have a personal view on what causes the pay gap which may be controversial but, logically, there has to be some truth in it: Women simply don’t ask for pay rises!

I have taken 1000’s of women through our flagship programme GQ™ for Women Leaders and each time it's the same. On the first day before lunch we brainstorm the topic of gender differences and how the politics of these differences play out at work. Invariably, there is a rich debate about whether or not we should be asking for pay rises, where they are deserved.

Most women believe that it is enough to keep your head down and you will be recognised for doing a good job and rewarded fairly for it. This simply isn’t the case. Research shows that the person who is most visible gets the promotion and the person who asks for the pay rise will earn more. Generally, when a male graduate is offered his salary package he sees it as a starting point for negotiation and the female graduate accepts the offer and says thank you. If this disparity continues throughout their careers, is it any wonder there is a pay gap?

What are you not asking for? Where do you deserve more in life but are too shy to speak up? If you know somebody who could do with some coaching in this area, please let me know as I am offering 1 complimentary place on the next programme 19/20th March in Central London for International Women’s Day. http://eve-olution.net/services/seminars.asp
